Again, I just remember pairing a lot of characters up with OCs in early fandoms. I guess that another early example would be Usagi/Mamoru (Serena/Darien) from Sailor Moon? I just remember watching the anime and rooting for them and thinking that their story was romantic, despite the frequent brainwashing of Mamoru and the parts where he acted like a jerk in the beginning.
