Just wondering, for all of the critics who slam romantic vampires such as the ones found in Twilight or Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, do their criticisms also apply to female vampires? I mean, many of them wish that vampires could be ugly, monstrous, and big, hulking brutes, but does that mean that they include female vampires in that criticism?
Because for all of the people criticizing recent vampires for being “effeminate, pretty boys,” I haven’t seen many people criticizing female vampires for being sexy and scantily-clad. I mean, sure, some people may slam them for being obvious sexual fantasies for straight and bisexual men, but has anybody argued that female vampires should also look like disgusting corpses? Or that they should also be big and bulky and completely animalistic without a trace of sexuality or allure?
Because if this criticism and recommended change only apply to male vampires…then that’s a double standard. If female vampires are attractive and glamorous, that’s okay; vampirism has long been a metaphor for forbidden sexuality. But if male vampires are attractive and glamorous, that’s stupid; because then they’re ‘non-threatening’ and are ‘ruining’ what vampires used to be, because before Bram Stoker and Sheridan LeFanu, there were never, ever any myths about handsome vampires to warn women about trusting strange men. Ever.
I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but I just don’t see that criticism leveled at female vampires as often.
